The iconic Red Square in Moscow is where you’ll find the Kremlin building, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum, and several state museums. It has a long and complicated history, and it’s well worth taking a guided tour with a local expert to learn about the square’s place in Russian history.

Red Square is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The various museums inside the square have separate opening hours that vary according to the time of year and day of the week.

Red Square can be entered free of charge, as can Lenin’s Mausoleum. Tickets for St. Basil’s Cathedral cost RUB700 for adults, RUB500 for Russian or CIS citizens, and RUB150 for visitors aged between 16 and 18 or Russian and CIS citizens who are pensioners. Children aged under 16 may enter the cathedral free of charge.

How to get there:

Red Square can be reached via metro to Okhotny Ryad (line 1/red line), Teatralnaya (line 2/green line), Ploschad Revolyutsii (line 3/blue line), and Kitay-Gorod (line 6/orange line and line 7/purple line). Each station is also served by a number of buses and trolleybuses.
