The island of Elafonisi is separated from the southwest coast of Crete by a shallow stretch of water, which you can wade across to reach the beautiful pink sand beaches. The warm, shallow water also makes the island an ideal swimming spot for families.

The island is always open, though it’s probably wise not to try to cross the water after dark and you will have to wade across cold water if you visit in the winter.

Access to the beach is free of charge, though you’ll have to rent a sun lounger from one of the beach bars if you want to use one.

how to get there

You can reach Elafonisi by taking a regional bus from Chania, although they only run during the high season. You can also take a boat along the coast from Paleochora, or join a group tour by coach.
