Lenin’s Mausoleum was created after Russians flocked to see Vladimir Lenin’s body on display after his death in 1924 and it became clear that it would be a site of pilgrimage for his followers. Today the tomb is still a popular site for visitors to Moscow, with many city tours making it a stop on their itinerary. It’s a somber memorial, and guests are asked to leave phones and cameras outside during their visit as a mark of respect.

opening hours

The mausoleum is open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 10 am to 1 pm. There may be additional closures for public holidays, and every 18 months the mausoleum is closed for 30 days so that the body and clothing of Lenin can be maintained.

how to get there

Lenin’s mausoleum is in Red Square, next to the Kremlin wall. Red Square can be reached via metro to Okhotny Ryad (line 1/red line), Teatralnaya (line 2/green line), Ploschad Revolyutsii (line 3/blue line), and Kitay-Gorod (line 6/orange line and line 7/purple line). Each station is also served by a number of buses and trolleybuses.
