The region surrounding Mount Teide has been a place of astronomical observations for centuries by astronomers, naturalists, and Augustinian monks. The Teide Observatory, established in 1964, continues this tradition by providing an institutional base for astronomical research facilitated by the favorable location and climate of the Canary Islands. Today, various European countries are involved in the construction and operation of the Observatorio del Teide. The Carlos Sánchez infrared telescope, which has beed situated at the observatory since 1972, is one of the largest of its kind.
From Teide, astronomers, naturalists and Augustinian monks have observed the night sky for centuries. The reason for this is the favorable location and climate of the Canary Islands, from which you can clearly see and explore the starry sky on many days of the year.
