Things to know about the Museu Picasso

Picasso and Barcelona were inseparable. Here are some curious facts that make the museum a must‑see.

Five medieval palaces under one roof

The museum occupies the palaces 'Palau Berenguer d’Aguilar', 'Palau del Baró de Castellet' and three neighbouring palaces dating from the 13th–15th centuries — an architectural treasure almost as fascinating as the art inside.

A gift from a friend

Jaume Sabartés, Picasso’s secretary and lifelong friend, donated his private collection to the city in 1960, laying the foundation for the museum that opened three years later.

The only complete Las Meninas series

Barcelona is the only place in the world where you can see all 58 reinterpretations of Velázquez’s masterpiece that Picasso painted in 1957.

A dynamic collection

The holdings grow every year through purchases, donations and long‑term loans — meaning repeat visits always reveal something new.
