General information

opening hours

The British Museum is open daily from 10 am to 5.30 pm, and from 10 am until 8.30 pm on Fridays. The Great Court and Information desk are open until half an hour after the galleries close. The museum is closed on 1 January, 24 December, 25 December, and 26 December, but is open on all other public holidays.

General entry to the museum is free. There may be charges for special exhibitions, these charges vary. Audio guides are available from the audio guide desk and cost £7 for adults. A family game-style guide is also available and costs £6. Special exhibitions prices: Monday to Friday - Adults £15, Seniors (60+) £15 (£7.50 after 12.00 on Mondays), Students and 16–18 years £13 (2-for-1 tickets on Fridays), Jobseekers £13, Disabled visitors £13 (£15 on weekends), Under 16s Free when accompanied by a paying adult, Members Free. Prices may vary.

how to get there

The British Museum can be reached by London Underground and by bus. The closest underground stops are Tottenham Court Road (Northern Line), Holborn (Central Line and Piccadilly Line), Russell Square (Piccadilly Line), and Goodge Street (Northern Line). Buses can be taken to New Oxford Street (1, 8, 19, 25, 38, 55, 98, 242), Tottenham Court Road/Gower Street (14, 24, 29, 73, 134, 390), and Southampton Row (59, 68, X68, 91, 168, 188). Bike racks are also available inside the museum gates. Limited parking is available for disabled visitors only, visitors will need to email tickets@britishmuseum.org to book a space.

security

For safety reasons, all bags, rucksacks, packages, and personal items may be searched before entry. Large items of luggage (over 8kg) and wheeled cases are not allowed on the premises. Storage for luggage is available at major rail stations, including King’s Cross, Charing Cross, and Euston.

cloakroom

A cloakroom is available from 9.45 am until 5.30 pm Saturday to Thursday, and until 8.30 pm on Fridays. Fold-up pushchairs can be stored for free, all other items will incur a charge. Items must be collected half an hour before the museum closes.

wifi

Free WiFi is available throughout the museum, just log on to British Museum WiFi when you arrive.

photography and filming

Photography with flash and video recording are allowed in most galleries as long as visitors use handheld equipment only and the video and images are for private purposes. Tripods are not permitted in any part of the museum.

accessibility

An accessible entrance is available on Montague Place, or there are self-operable lifts on both sides of the front steps of the museum. It is possible to borrow a wheelchair from the museum, for this service it’s recommended to email the museum at tickets@britishmuseum.org at least 48 hours in advance. For deaf visitors, a British Sign Language guide is available free of charge. There is also a free audio-descriptive guide available for blind or partially-sighted visitors. Guide and assistance dogs are welcome. Large print versions of the museum plan and selected gallery guides are available, and magnifying glasses are available to borrow with a £5 deposit.
