Universal Studios Hollywood is the home of the original backlot studio tour (in 1915!) and is now also home to awesome attractions, spectacular shows, and hair-raising rides. Since 2016 the park has also been home to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, with its own magical set of rides and live shows. The park gets extremely busy during the summer months and vacation season, so it’s recommended to buy tickets in advance to save time and money.

6 tips for visiting the Universal Studios Hollywood

The escalators joining the Upper Lot and the Lower Lot take about 10 minutes to navigate, so do one lot at a time to avoid spending all day going up and down.

If you want to spend less time queuing (but can’t or don’t want to splash out on Express passes) then consider using the “Single Rider” queues where they’re available. That line takes up any empty spaces in a ride vehicle, so while your party might get split up you’ll get to ride more quickly.

Los Angeles gets very hot, especially in summer! Avoid heat stroke by staying hydrated. Visitors can bring a 2 liter bottle of water into the park, and there are drinking fountains to refill your bottle throughout the day.

The rides are open from the time the park opens until it closes, but the shows are only at certain times throughout the day. Check the timetable before joining any lines so you don’t miss anything you want to see! Plus, the final Studio Tour leaves quite a while before the park closes, check that timetable as well so you don’t miss out.

For those visiting with a child too young to ride, you can use the Child Switch room - one of you can ride while the other waits with the child, and then the second person gets to ride straight away, without having to wait in the line again.

There aren’t any table-service restaurants, and none of the eateries take reservations, so consider eating lunch a little earlier or later than usual to avoid the crowds.

What’s there to see and do in the park?

Universal Studios Hollywood is split into two sections, the Upper Lot and the Lower Lot, each of which has themed areas with rides, shows, and other attractions, plus food and merchandise stores. The Upper Lot includes Despicable Me-themed rides and attractions, a ride based on The Simpsons, plus shows based on stunts (physical and digital) used in movies. It’s also the start of the Universal Studios Tour, and is where you can find The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, with its own themed rides, shows, stores, and restaurants. Will it be interesting for kids who can’t go on rides?

There’s plenty of rides which don’t have height limits (for example the Silly Swirly carnival ride, plus the Studio Tour) or have limits which include most kids under 5 (such as Flight of the Hippogriff or Despicable Me Minion Mayhem), but for kids who’d rather not ride there are plenty of things to do. There’s a Despicable Me-themed play area in the Upper Lot, a dinosaur-themed play are in the Lower Lot, Universal’s Animal Actors show, and a host of characters available to meet (including Paddington Bear, Dora the Explorer, the Minions and many more!). What’s the deal with the Studio Tour?

The Universal Studios Tour (also known as the Backlot Tour) lasts about 60 minutes and takes guests on trams around the Front Lot and Backlot, passing sets and props from famous movies (including Psycho, Bath to the Future, and War of the Worlds) along the way. The tram also stops to experience some staged demonstrations of special effects, including an earthquake, a flash flood, and surprise encounters with certain… stars. Park hours vary throughout the year. The park generally opens at 9 am, but in winter it may open at 10 am. Early entry is half an hour before park opening on that particular day. The park closes between 5 pm and 10 pm depending on the day and the season, so check the park’s calendar before your visit.

how to get there

The studios can be reached via the Metro Red Line to Universal City, where a free shuttle bus will take visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood without any need for crossing busy intersections. Parking is available for a fee, and electric vehicle charging points are also available.

For security reasons, guests will be required to pass through metal detectors, and their bags through x-ray machines prior to entering the park. Alcohol and drugs of any kind are prohibited in the park. Glass containers and large containers of food are also prohibited, though guests are permitted to bring baby food/formula, small snacks, or any food required for medical reasons or to fulfill special dietary requirements.

All of Universal Studios Hollywood’s shopping and dining facilities are wheelchair accessible, and all shows have reserved area for visitors using wheelchairs. Wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECVs) are available for rent inside the park. At the present moment, none of the ride vehicles in the park accommodate ECVs, at rides which can accommodate standard wheelchairs guests will be given the option of transferring to a standard wheelchair before riding.
For guests who are hard of hearing, assistive listening devices are available at Guest Relations free of charge. If one week’s notice is given, sign language interpreting services are also available free of charge for Deaf visitors. For blind or partially-sighted guests, large font or braille scripts of all shows are available from Guest Services. Ride attendants will be able to assist any guest with a cane, either safely storing the cane within the ride vehicle or holding it during the ride and returning it to the guest immediately once the ride has ended.
Service animals are welcome throughout the park. Each attraction has entry/boarding requirements which will assist the service animal’s owner in making a decision about whether their animal can safely be admitted.
Guests using oxygen tanks can use them safely in most of the shows and some of the attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood, but due to dramatic movement of ride vehicles or certain flame effects, there may be some attractions where oxygen tanks are not permitted.
